Kratom is an ancient herb that originates from Southeast Asia. It has recently become increasingly popular in the United States but there are many questions surrounding kratom. One that we often get asked is, “What is the best way to store kratom?” In this article, we will explore how you should store your kratom products, as well as things that you should not do during the storage of this herb.
Kratom is best known for its potent alkaloid content. Proper storage is needed to keep the potency of alkaloids at peak levels. Kratom is extremely vulnerable to outside environmental influences. To avoid any type of contamination you will want to keep it away from the outside world.
To do this, storage needs to be done in a container that will seal securely and tight. We will get more into different types of storage shortly. However, the reason proper storage is so important is the fact that your product will decrease in potency levels quickly if not properly cared for. As a result, you will not get the wellness support that you are seeking and your kratom will be in jeopardy of contamination.
Kratom grows on tropical evergreen trees known as Mitragyna speciosa. These trees grow naturally in the Southeast part of Asia. You will find them in several areas including Thailand, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and more.
Once the leaves hit a specific maturity level, they will be harvested and undergo a drying process. They will then be ground into a fine powder. This powder can be packaged and sold, or used to create other products including capsules and extracts.
The origins of the plant will determine the conditions that are needed to keep your kratom at its optimal freshness. The first 3 months after kratom has been harvested is when the active compounds are most concentrated in the plant. As time goes on, environmental factors will lower the quality of your kratom.
However, the good news is, with proper storage you can extend the life and potency levels of your kratom products.
If you buy kratom in bulk and need to store a large amount of kratom for several months, the process of storing will be slightly different from those who will use up their kratom quickly.
Light – Kratom should never be overexposed to light. This will affect the compounds within your products.
Air – All kratom products will need to be stored in airtight containers because of oxidation. When it is exposed to the air for long periods it will lose potency and run a greater chance of being contaminated. Kratom becomes extremely susceptible to environmental changes once it has been harvested from the trees. Therefore, you need to keep oxygen to a minimum in your storage containers.
Store in a cool area – For kratom to maintain its freshness, it will need to be kept in a cool area. Some avid users choose to store their products in the refrigerator. However, this is not necessary. As long as you choose an area that is not going to be exposed to high temperatures you should be good. Cool conditions will help keep the alkaloids intact and deter them from degrading. You may choose to store it in a drawer, refrigerator, in the basement, etc. Kratom does not like the fluctuation of temperature, so it will need to stay at a constant temperature for optimal freshness.
Let’s take a deeper look at the different ways you want to treat the short-term and long-term storage of kratom.
Short-term storage is considered 3 months or less. Here are some tips to help keep your products at optimal levels of freshness.
It is recommended by other kratom users to divide your kratom into small plastic bags. Dividing your product into bags will help cut down on contamination and keep your products at their optimal freshness.
Be sure that if you are doing this method you remove all the air from the bag. Remember, oxygen is not beneficial to kratom’s longevity. Vacuum seal bags are a great short-term storage method. Once your bags are sealed you can place them in a larger container or storage bin. This will help you easily keep your kratom together.
Be certain that it is not exposed to UV light, dampness, or oxygen as these are the things that will hinder the potency levels of kratom.
If you buy your kratom in bulk, then you will need to store it differently. Even kratom that is well-kept will run the risk of degrading. So, you will want to divide your kratom up into more substantial portions than the method that we talked about above. You can split your kratom up monthly, by strains, or by different forms.
You may also want to consider investing in vacuum-sealed bags. This will ensure that your products are being kept from oxidation, which can be a huge problem for large quantities. Using large Tupperware storage containers will not work for the long-term storage of kratom.
Be sure that you avoid all humidity and keep your kratom in a dry area. This simply means that you want to avoid areas that are damp and humid. These types of areas are known for mold and could pose a threat to your kratom products.
For those who choose to keep their kratom in the refrigerator or freezer, you should check on your stash regularly. You want to make sure that it is not freezer burnt. In addition, no matter where you store your kratom, a regular check is important.
You want to ensure that there is no loss of color or visible signs of decay or freezer burn. If there is, then you will want to dispose of your kratom. All kratom that looks different than when you stored it means that something has changed during the process of storage. This is typically a bad sign and you never want to take a risk.
